What you need to know
- Youtube music tests a “Daily Discover” flow which drops fresh tracks every day, each with a short note explaining why it is there.
- Unlike the programmed reading lists of Spotify, it is a song recommendation system by song with an instant context.
- The design and exceptional album of the carousel make it difficult to miss.
Music streaming services thrive to help listeners find new songs. To this end, YouTube Music would work on a new tool called “Your Daily Discover” to refine its recommendations.
As spotted by the Reddit user Barisberatwnr (via Android authority), the functionality appears as a carousel on the home screen of YouTube Music, with a “Play All” button which instantly builds a new reading list.
The functionality appears above the “Trening Songs for You” section on the home page of YouTube Music. Since it is still in testing, its placement could change and some users say that it only appears on and disagree.
Larger and daring arrangement
This horizontal carousel breaks with the usual mixtures of YouTube Music with an oversized arrangement and a catchy album. Each tile includes a brief label – like “because you liked” or “for fans of” – to show exactly why it is recommended.
Unlike the fixed programming of Spotify Playlists such as Discover Weekly and Daylist, the new functionality of YouTube Music adds a context to each choice, explaining exactly why it is there, what Spotify is not currently doing.
Instead of counting on reading lists like Spotify, the new functionality of YouTube Music serves choices of daily songs, each with a short reason why it was chosen. It is built to direct listeners to fresh music that corresponds to their tastes, and does it faster than the SPOTIFY approach.
The details on the Carrousel Daily Discover are always blurred, without any words on the number of songs it shows or in the event of a cap. Currently, it is only available for a small group of YouTube music users, and Google has not said when or if it will reach everyone.
