Tl; DR

  • Google is testing live translation functionality in a circle to search.
  • Unlike the current translation function, live functionality is likely to translate dynamic screens, such as web pages or motion videos.
  • The lived functionality can be used by application, for the whole screen, or a smaller and selected part.

Update, August 18, 2025 (09:46 am he): It seems that the functionality of translating live from Circle To Search already takes place to certain users of Google App Beta in the form of scrolling and translation. Consult our demo for more details.

Original article, August 18, 2025 (04:45 am HE): The Google Research Circle is a stellar search function that allows you to search for information about everything on the screen. In addition to its research feature, Circle To Search allows you to translate any static text on the screen, and the functionality is about to obtain a big boost which will also allow the translation for text movement.

We recently learned from Google Testing a new “live” feature in Circle To Search. As probably means by the use of “live”, the functionality extends the translation beyond static images to other rapid evolution interfaces, such as web or media pages, such as GIFs and videos. Although the functionality is currently under development (and remains far from perfect), we have seen certain aspects working, giving us an indication of the way it could work after all.

Live Translate is not live at the moment, but we have been able to retort certain parameters to activate its test version. The current live trigger is nested in the circle with the research application drawer (which is itself tested) which combines other features such as ordinary screen translation function and the identification of songs. Once launched, he asks you if you want it to work for the whole screen or simply specific applications, as with the new screen recorder launched in Android 15.

Live Translate launches with a new smooth animation and a rainbow gradient along the edges of the screen, which is visible throughout the duration of the functionality. The favorite output language for the live translation function can be defined using a floating superposition. This superposition can also be moved around the screen or even minimize to expose the text of a particular section of the screen.

The floating superposition is also delivered with a crop function, which probably translates the text of part of the screen. However, this does not seem to work for us for the moment. Next to it is a button that switches live, triggering a return to the standard circle to search for the interface.

Currently, the live translation function is not entirely functional and the text translated remains only for a short time. This did not allow us to test the functionality with videos or to interpret the delay in the translation, although we hope to do so as we learn more updates of functionality.
