Cottonwood Heights – A man from Cottonwood Heights was arrested Tuesday after the police could have thousands – or perhaps millions – images of sexual abuse materials on children stored on his hard drives and also created AI realistic images of sexual abuse materials on children.
Russell Kenneth Gatrell, 45, was sentenced to Salt Lake County prison to investigate five chiefs of aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor.
The investigation began on June 25, when the working group on the exploitation of children and the trafficking of human beings of the FBI began to investigate a person sharing equipment of sexual abuse for children.
“Investigators received 139 files from an IP address in Cottonwood Heights,” said a police booking affidavit. On Tuesday, investigators served a search warrant at the Gatrell residence.
“Gatrell admitted to see, download and share children’s sexual abuse materials from his residence. Gatrell admitted to having stored the sexual abuse equipment for a network storage device that contained more than 15 hard drives totaling around 280 TB of storage,” said Affidavit.
Gatrell told investigators that he had an “unknown” quantity of children’s abuse equipment stored on hard drives and estimated that the total amount could be more than 100 GB, according to the Affidavit.
“We think that, at least, Gatrell stored sexual abuse equipment on children in 280 TB of storage, which could store around 56 to 280 million photographs depending on the quality,” explains the Affidavit.
Gatrell also used AI to create children’s sexual abuse equipment from stock images, according to investigators.
“FBI computer scientists carried out an initial IA Gatrell examination used and determined that it was incredibly advanced and that Gatrell probably used images of identifiable internet children to create this sexual abuse material on a child,” said Affidavit.
The survey on the exact quantity of the sexual abuse of children that Gatrell would have collected took place on Tuesday.
