Assuming that he can transform his Orion Incremeted Reality Glasses project into a real product that people can buy, Meta apparently wants to enter the robots afterwards. It is according to Sources‘Alex HeathWho spoke to Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth and reports that like Apple, Google and Tesla, Meta is looking for robotics.
Unlike these other companies, Meta apparently did not focus on competition in equipment. He has an “metabot” in progress, but his real objective is to create software that other companies can concede, a bit like Google with Android. “The software is the bottleneck”, according to Bosworth, and the hope is that the combined powers of the Meta robotic team – led by Marc WhittenThe former Cruise CEO – and its highly publicized superintendent laboratories can produce a solution.
This work apparently starts with the development of a “world model” which can help a robot “make the software simulation required to animate a dexterous hand”, but will probably extend to more complicated movements and tasks on the road. In February 2025, Meta planned to build a robot that could manage household chores such as cleaning or folding the toeors. Given how much everything sounds early, it’s probably far away.
Meta is not the only one to continue robotics. Apple would have worked on its own domestic robots, starting with an arm mounted on the table with a screen. Tesla has regularly demonstrated the versions of its Optimus robot to the public, although often in highly controlled scenarios. Meta has not yet achieved her goal of usurping the smartphone with AR glasses. Whether or not, it seems that robots will be the thing that burns money.
