Android Auto 15.2 breaks quick controls on vertical taskbars, users report widespread issues

The latest Android Auto 15.2 update is now rolling out to more vehicles, but several users have noticed that a long-standing feature, “Quick Controls,” is no longer working as expected. This feature, once accessed through the Android Auto settings menu, allowed drivers to manage music playback and view navigation instructions while using other apps. Despite losing prominence after the introduction of Google’s modern dashboard interface, Quick Controls remained a convenient option for those who preferred the traditional taskbar-based layout.

Problem with vertical taskbars

According to a report, Quick Controls appears faulty on screens where the Android Auto taskbar is displayed vertically. Previously, enabling Quick Controls automatically moved the taskbar to the bottom of the screen, restoring its horizontal functionality. With the new update, toggling the option has no effect, the taskbar remains fixed and shortcut controls do not appear.

The first reports of the malfunction appeared in late September, coinciding with the move from Android Auto 15.2 to the stable version. As the update continues to affect more vehicles and head units, complaints are steadily increasing, suggesting a widespread problem among users.

Bug or intentional change?

It’s still unclear whether the issue is a temporary bug or an intentional design change by Google. Some users have noted that Quick Controls still work correctly on certain display orientations and screen configurations, implying that their removal may not be deliberate. Without an official statement from Google, speculation continues.

Over the past year, Android Auto has undergone a significant UI restructuring, with Google streamlining its interface and prioritizing dashboard presentation. Many old and redundant features have been abandoned in favor of simplicity and a more consistent in-vehicle experience. While this aligns with the company’s design philosophy, current inconsistencies between devices suggest a possible compatibility issue or incomplete rollout rather than permanent removal.

What users can do

For now, affected users have limited options other than waiting for Google to fix the issue in a future update. Android Auto owners are advised to monitor the official forums and Google’s support page for announcements regarding bug fixes.

As Android Auto continues to evolve, users may have to adapt to the new dashboard-based experience, but many are hoping that Quick Controls, a feature loved for its convenience, will soon be restored to all screen orientations.
