Apple today updated its iMessage Troubleshooting Support Document to add a scenario that may occur in iOS 26. If you don’t enable iMessage or an eSIM when setting up a new iPhone with iOS 26, it may prevent iMessage from working.
Apple says that iMessage does not automatically activate when setting up an eSIM in the Settings app after the iPhone initial setup period, so this must be done manually.
After enabling an eSIM, users can open the Settings app, tap Apps, choose Messages, then turn iMessage off and on again for the feature to work as expected.
When iMessage is not properly activated after setting up an eSIM, users may receive an Undelivered alert, see their messages sent as SMS/RCS messages in green bubbles, or see their iMessages sent from an email address instead of a phone number.
