Following the announcement of Android Workgroup Earlier this year, the first preview version of the Swift SDK for Android was just rolled out. Here are the details.

In the blog post breaking the news (via MacMagazine), developer Joannis Orlandos explains that today marked the announcement of “nightly preview builds of the Swift SDK for Android“. Excerpt from the blog post:
“This milestone reflects months of effort from the Android Working Group, building on many years of grassroots community effort. With the SDK, developers can start developing Android apps in Swift, opening new avenues for cross-platform development and accelerating innovation in the mobile ecosystem.
The Swift SDK for Android is available today, bundled with the Windows installer or downloadable separately for use on Linux or macOS.
Alongside today’s rollout, the group also released a getting started guidewith a comprehensive overview and step-by-step instructions on the dependencies, packages, and bundles needed to get started.
There is also several examples of projects available on GitHub, along with support material for developers looking to integrate Swift code into existing Android projects, explore Java interoperability via the Swift-Java projectand more.
Finally, the group says it is in the process of developing a document which will detail the next steps of the project and asks developers “to share your experiences, ideas, tools and applications in the Swift forums”.
