Google wants to make multitasking easier on Android tablets

Android phones and tablets already offer a great multitasking experience. And Google continues to refine it by adding features such as a 90:10 split screen modemaking it flexible and easier to run multiple apps simultaneously on small screen devices. Yet multitasking on Android tablets is nowhere near as good as it should be. Luckily, Google realizes this and might add the ability to create app bubbles, allowing you to easily run and switch between multiple apps.

Reports that Google was working on a “bubble anything” feature emerged in October 2024, with the feature hidden in Android 15 QPR1 Beta 2. At the time, it seemed like the company might make this feature official with Android 16, but that didn’t happen.

NOW, Android AuthorityMishaal Rahman from found more references to this feature in the latest Android Canary 2510, albeit with some major tweaks. Instead of being able to bring up anything, code snippets indicate that Google will let you bring up Android apps on tablets by dragging an app icon from one of the bottom corners of the screen.

The first time users perform the gesture, a tutorial will appear explaining how the new bubble feature works. According to the code strings, it will explain to users how an app can be dragged “to the bottom corners to make it float”, with an animation showing how to create a bubble from the taskbar using a swipe gesture.

The report claims that you may be able to launch any Android app in a floating bubble.

From bubbling conversations to apps

Right now, Android only lets you stream conversations. This allows you to move them freely while using other apps and access them quickly without blocking what you’re doing. So the ability to create app bubbles on Android tablets seems like a natural extension of this feature.

Knowing Google, it’s still possible that this feature will be removed. But with a full tutorial with animations now in place, that seems unlikely.

Google could roll out the ability to push Android apps to tablets with the first quarterly platform release of Android 16 in 2026. Otherwise, we may have to wait until Android 17 for the feature to become official.
