OpenAI’s Sora has exploded on Android, with nearly 296,000 installations in the US, as wider availability has increased demand beyond the launch of iOS.
Sora’s Android launch has surpassed its debut on iOSgarnering around 470,000 first-day installs across seven markets, according to Appfigures. Wider regional availability, as well as the end of invite-only access in major markets, have boosted adoption.
OpenAI’s iOS rollout has been limited to the US and Canada via invitations, limiting initial growth despite strong momentum. The iOS application nevertheless exceeded one million installations during its first week and still ranks high in the Top Free ranking of the American App Store.
Appfigures’ revised modeling puts day-one iOS installs at around 110,000 (up from 56,000), with around 69,300 coming from the US. On Android, availability extends to the United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. US installs on day one were around 296,000, showing sustained demand beyond the iOS launch.
Sora lets users generate videos from text prompts and animate themselves or their friends via “Cameos,” sharing the results in a TikTok-style vertical feed. Engagement features for creation and discovery drive word of mouth and repeat usage across both platforms.
Competition in video and mobile AI assistants is heating up, with Meta AI expanding its application to Europe on the same day. Market share will depend on geographic reach, feature velocity, authoring tools, and distribution via app store graphics and social feeds.
