- The chatgpt chief declared at the opening that Openai would be interested in buying Google Chrome if the opportunity arises.
- Nick Turley added that he was deeply worried that Optaai was confronted with many difficulties to integrate into Android smartphones.
- If Openai buys Chrome, he could “have the possibility of presenting to users what an IA-STIF experience”.
OPENAI would be willing to buy the Google Chrome browser if a court ordered its acquisition, Nick Turley, the Openai Chatgpt chief said on Tuesday. Turley was invited to testify by the Ministry of Justice (DoJ) as part of the Google antitrust trial which should last the next three weeks (as indicated by Bloomberg).
“Yes, we would do it, as many other parts would,” said Turley when asked if the company would be interested in buying Chrome.
The judge presiding over this case, Amit Mehta, determined last year that Google violated antitrust laws by monopolizing the research market.
As part of the remedy, even on the rules of the game for other competitors on the market, the DOJ proposed that Google sells its web browser, and perhaps even Android. The DoJ argues that the separation of these key assets is the only way to solve the Google monopoly problem.
Users should be able to choose, says chatgpt
Bloomberg reports that Turley said chrome more integrated into Openai would improve the product in many ways. “You could offer a truly incredible experience,” he said. Openai could “have the possibility of introducing users in what an IA-STIF experience” looks like.
Turley even said that despite being the first choice of Apple AI, Openai is faced with many difficulties when it comes to setting foot in the door with Android smartphones, since Google Gemini resident in most of these phones.
Speaking of difficulty, the chatgpt chief said they feared that Openai would be excluded by technology giants like Google, which governs the market. “We have powerful competitors who control access points for the way people discover the products, including our product. People discover via a browser or an application store,” he said.
On the other hand, Google does not agree and argues that Google Search and its products were the first obvious choice for many users, and forcing users to use alternative browsers or search engines could make them difficult to reach Google services.
Google’s defense
Earlier in the day, the vice-president of Google confirmed that the company paid Samsung to preset the Gemini on its aircraft. This payment contract is fixed for two years and provides fixed monthly payments which began in January 2024. Defending itself, the vice-president of Google said that other companies like Microsoft, Meta and Openai have all approached Samsung with “competitive offers” to make their AI a defect on its devices.
Google said it had changed the above contract with Samsung to allow it to offer other AI applications in its devices if it chooses it.
That said, Google earns the most money than research and other advertisements (in the third quarter of 2024, it reached $ 49.39 billion) and that would make things extremely difficult for potential buyers. That said, if Google is pushed by the judge to do so, it would lead to a significant change in the way we interact with Google and its products. It remains to be seen how things will take place in the next three weeks.
