iOS 18 – This is why there is a new black point on your iPhone

Since the upgrade to iOS 18.4, have you noticed a black point at the top of your iPhone? You are not alone – and rest assured, it is nothing to fear. The new black point is part of the iOS 18.4 update from Apple.

In a post on Redditalso reported by UniladA user published a photo of the Mystery DOT, which appeared on their iPhone 16 after having passed to iOS 18.4, to the right of the dynamic island.

Many people thought it was a bug since the upgrade to iOS 18, with other jokes on the new black point. “Your dynamic island had a baby. Congratulations !!!” A Reddit user wrote.

“They have changed it, then now, when there is an active activity on the dynamic island, the confidentiality indicator moves to the side,” replied another Reddit user. And they are right.

The point – or confidentiality indicator – is an intentional functionality added by Apple in iOS 18.4, but the points are there in general since iOS 14. The orange point on your iPhone reveals that the camera is used, in case an application or service uses it without your knowledge.

The point can also appear if someone has activated the camera intentionally during a cyber attack, for example using spy software. Meanwhile, the green point lights up when your iPhone microphone will be used, so don’t be surprised if this happens when you are on call.

In iOS 18.4, a black outline was added to orange and green points to make them more obvious. This was reported on March 21 by a website focused on Apple Macrumors. “The small points that appear on the menu bar of the ‌iphone‌ when the camera or the microphone is used have been moved to the left and are now more apparent thanks to a black background,” writes the site.

So there you have it. The black point of your iPhone after upgrading to iOS 18.4 is not a bug at all. It is an improvement in confidentiality that helps ensure the safety of your iPhone.
