Pope Leo XIV made his first release since his election on Saturday, making a surprise stop to pray to the tomb of his predecessor.
Saturday afternoon, the new pontiff went to a sanctuary dedicated to Madonna in the city of Genazzano.
The sanctuary is managed by the Augustinian brothers, the order to which the Pope belongs, and has been a place of pilgrimage since the 15th century.

On the way back to the Vatican, he stopped to pray to the tomb of Pope Francis at the St Mary Major basilica.
