One of the new features of Android 16 is the “live updates” and we finally get a peak in the way they work for applications like Google Maps and Uber Eats, but we could also wait longer than expected to use them.
During I / O developer’s KeynoteGoogle briefly discussed live updates in Android 16, noting what they are used and displaying the glimpse of what they will look like in Google Maps, Waymo One and Uber Eats. Like “live activities” on iOS, the status of something is shown with a progression bar and other details.
Google shows how it works on a pixel, an ultra galaxy s25, as well as on an Oppo device that can easily Be confused with an iPhone thanks to its obviously similar lock screen design.

Interestingly, however, Google implies that we are getting out of this functionality – it is not live in the first beta QPR1 version. In the article mentioned above, Google says that live updates will be “available soon” and indicates on stage that they “will be deployed on devices during the next year”.
In Android 16, we added a new feature, live updates. They allow you to display sensitive time updates for navigation, deliveries or radiographs using the new progression style model, deploying devices over the next year.
Updates of applications are probably a major point that will slow this deployment, but it is interesting to hear that it could take several months.
