Earlier this week, during its annual WWDC Keynote, Apple unveiled a multitude of titles like Liquid Glass, a new Game applicationAnd visual intelligence, as well as two main tools for protecting spam at iOS 26 this fall. Although I was a little disappointed with the lack of new security or even confidentiality features, these new tools will modify the game for users who receive boring spam calls and messages on everyday life. Here’s how they work.
In a previous edition of Security Cock, I predicted that Apple would finally announce the end -to -end encryption (E2EE) to the RCS universal profile at WWDC 2025. Earlier last year, the company announced that it led the charge with Google by its side to get there. Finally, this would make RCS messages between iOS and Android devices completely encrypted beyond the transit, which makes the texts inaccessible and illegible on the server side.
However, this did not happen. In a statement at 9TO5MAC in March of this year, Apple said that this feature was in a “future software update”. Many, including myself, thought that this year’s WWDC would be the ideal place to announce it.
As I said earlier this month:
I cannot think of a better way for the company to reaffirm its position as a leader in industry than to have GMSA, which will probably be at the event, “on stage” during the pre -recorded speech, strengthening Apple’s commitment to confidentiality by bringing E2EE to the RCS universal profile.
To call bullets and strikes … I get lost.
Calls
Call screening is a new addition to the redesigned phone application. In iOS 26, when users receive an unknown number call, the iPhone will now answer them in the background. When these calls are answered, the appellants will be invited by an automated voice to indicate their name and the reason for the call. These responses are then transcribed in real time for examination directly on the locking screen. From there, users can decide to ignore the call, slide to answer or type an answer. The latter will use the same robotic voice unrelated to SIRI to read the calling up to the caller on the other line. Users will immediately see the responses translated on the call screen.
In addition, iOS 26 now makes it possible to report voice messages as a spam, a functionality previously missed in iOS 18. In the new telephone application, voice messages considered to be spam by users can now be reported and sent to Apple. From there, we can only speculate on what the company will do with it. I suspect that, as a “junk report” in messages on iOS 18, it will be used to improve certain intelligent spam detection algorithms.
While screening for calls in iOS 26 always requires a human to review the call manually and not Again Use Apple Intelligence to determine if an incoming call is a spam (like robocalles or teleplears) or something important, this is a solid first step. A future update will probably introduce the reasoning powered by AI to make these decisions automatically.
Then let’s move on to messages, where Apple did something incredible in the fight of decades against unwanted texts and scams. Now, in iOS 26, incoming text messages can be classified as messages, unknown sender, spam and recently deleted. It now looks like a reception box by email. Users can even filter with unrelated messages.
On the days when eating messages with conversations of friends and family surrounded by boring spam and unpaid toll scams are numbered. In iOS 26, the texts of known contacts will be automatically displayed on the main Page of messages, while unknown numbers are automatically placed in a more hidden folder called unknown shippers.
When I demonstrate this feature on my iPhone 16 pro this week, I couldn’t help but think of my parents, my grandparents and those who are more likely to be victims of malicious texts. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported that in 2024, American consumers lost $ 470 million against scams that started with text messages. If unknown shippers (for example, scams, spam) are now out of sight, most of them are out of mind, which will surely harm the innocent.
It is therefore the new Senders unknown file in messages on iOS 26.
Directly below is another spam entitled. Although he reported several texts this week as such, I haven’t done anything here yet. Mine is empty. This folder uses similar spam detection algorithms, if not the same, in iOS 18 to classify incoming text messages. I suspect that the algorithm needs more sampling data for beta to take determinations.
These are the new Tools of Spam to come on iOS 26, as well as MacOS 26, and iPados 26 this fall! It was not necessarily a massive week for new security and confidentiality features (maybe a good thing?), But I will take this. I would love to hear your reflections in the comments below.
