You can execute iOS on Nintendo Switch, it effectively transforming it into the slowest iPhone in the world


A technology enthusiast named Patryk recently achieved a wild feat that feels directly outside the Steve Wozniak workshop: to make Apple iOS light on a first generation Nintendo switch. Yes, the same pocket computer built for Mario Kart and Zelda is now pretended to be “the slowest iPhone in the world”.


Think of the strange match. The original Nintendo switch, deployed in 2017, operates on a Nvidia Tegra X1 chip – a piece of arm technology that is a parent to the guts of iphones, iPads and even MacBook today. This shared DNA is the first index why iOS on a switch is not a total science fiction. Unlike trying to slap the windows on a PlayStation, the switch equipment enters a language closely close to Apple silicon to make emulation a possibility. But possible does not mean a breeze. IOS is a fortress, designed to operate only on Apple’s well -kept lawn. Step in Patryk, armed with grain and a heavy open source tool called Qemu.

Qemu, or rapid emulator, is the heart of this madness. It is like a change of form, imitating different material configurations in a virtual world. Imagine it as a translator, allowing TEGRA X1 of Switch to play the role of the A13 bionic chip of an iPhone 11. Patryk has caught a modified Qemu version for Apple Silicon, prepared by a team called Chefkissinc and shared on Github. The start of the iOS took two exhausting days of DIY.

Starting the iOS on the switch takes place for a breathtaking 20 minutes – longer than sauturing a pizza frozen in the oven. Once he got into play, it’s a trembling mess. Panic of the nucleus – these hiccups of crash and burns from clashes in terms of hardware software, such as watchmaking work. Open an application? He crashes with a dead time. Scrolling parameters? Do not hold your breath. Patryk sums up: “I lost my head (and 2 days of my life to install it).” It turns out that the switch is far too underlying for iOS, which thrives on optimized silicon and optimized at Apple high octane. The Tegra X1, solid for games, cannot hack it.

Why the fight? The general emulation costs are part of it. Qemu does not work iOS directly – it builds a virtual iPhone configuration, which attributes the modest guts of the switch. The Tegra X1, a relic of 2015, lacks specialized muscles and bits – such as the neural engine or Apple efficiency nuclei – on which iOS counts. Mix the 4 GB of RAM of the switch, a ribbon compared to modern iPhones, and you have a disaster in slow motion. In addition, iOS is a locked garden, with drivers and adjustments perfected for Apple equipment.

This is not the first detour of the game switch. Its arms roots made it a favorite for modding. Android, with its open atmosphere, has been working on it since 2019 with far fewer stories. The gap? Android is looking to adapt to various equipment, while iOS insists on the exact configuration of Apple.
