Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer Says AI Is the ‘Blah Average of Things’

Not everyone believes that AI spends the end of the animators.

Pixar’s creation director Pete Doctor recently said on the Podcast “Working It Out” by the actor Mike Birbiglia that he was not impressed by AI, the appellant “Fade”.

“AI seems to be the least impressive average of things,” he said.

AI is a subject inducing anxiety in Hollywood. Critics of technology fear that it will eliminate jobs in the entertainment industry. This was one of the reasons why unionized writers went on strike for almost five months in 2023. Those who support the integration of AI, on the other hand, as director James Cameron, believe that this could make the process of realization more profitable.

From the point of view of Doctor, when he said that everyone was “disturbed” by AI, he does not think that it will erase humans from the animated cinema process. The 29th animated operation of Pixar, “Elio”, struck the rooms on June 20.

“If you look back over time, the number of animators drawn by hand who was really brilliant was in the dozens,” said Doctor. “A very small number of people who could draw quite well. Understands the dynamics of movement. The acting character. Had the right sensitivities.”

The computers, he said, have made animation more accessible, which means that people do not have to be a “brilliantly draft person” to be a host. “I must still have performance and timing, but one of the heavy elevators was made by the computer,” he said.

Doctor said that AI, like computers, could mitigate some of the heaviest tasks associated with animation.

“I was wondering if AI will continue to help us lift some of the heavy burdens that we have to wear as an animator and perhaps emphasize performance,” he said.

Disney representatives did not respond to a request for comments from Business Insider.
