Meta to spend hundreds of billions on AI data centres, says Mark Zuckerberg

Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg said the social media giant would spend hundreds of billions of dollars for the construction of huge AI data centers in the United States.

The first multi-Gigawatt data center, called Prometheus, is expected to be posted in 2026, said Zuckerberg.

He said that one of the sites will cover an area almost the size of Manhattan (59.1 km2 / 22.8 km2).

Meta has invested massively in efforts to develop what he called “superintelligence” – the technology which, according to her, could surpass the most intelligent humans.

The company, which earned most of its money from online advertising, generated more than $ 160 billion in revenues in 2024.

In an article on his social media platform, Threads, Zuckerberg said that Meta built several multi-Gigawatt clusters, and a single cluster, called Hyperion, could evolve up to five gigawatts over several years.

“We also build several Titan clusters.

Prometheus will be built in New Albany, Ohio, while Hyperion will be built in Louisiana and should be entirely online by 2030, Zuckerberg said.

He said that Meta “would invest hundreds of billions of dollars … to build a superintendent” and that the centers had received “names adapted to their scale and their impact”.

Karl Freund, principal analyst at Cambrian Ai Research, told the BBC: “Clearly, Zuckerberg intends to go to the top of the pile of IA”.

“The talent he hires will have access to some of the best IA materials in the world,” added Freund.

Meta-actions were negotiated 1% more following the announcement, the Reuters News Agency reported. The stock has increased by more than 20% so far this year.

There are at least 10,000 data centers around the world by hosting the cloud – remote servers that store digital information – with most of them located in the United States, followed by the United Kingdom and Germany.

AI data centers are extremely intensive in energy and water. A study estimates that these centers could consume 1.7 billion of water gallons worldwide by 2027. A single IA request – for example, pussy demand – can use as much water as a small bottle as you buy in the corner shop.
