Google continues to integrate Android features into portable devices, improving conviviality and convenience for users. Now, a safety tool originally launched on smartphones is heading for the Pixel watch, and potentially other OS Wear watches. The functionality in question is identity check, a thoughtful addition introduced into Android 15. New discoveries suggest that it extends to the smartwatches, offering a more transparent and secure experience.
What is Android identity control?
The identity verification is Google’s response to the protection of Apple stolen devices. This is a safety feature designed to prevent unauthorized access to sensitive data, such as your Google password manager and device settings if your phone is stolen or moved outside a confidence location with a compromise pin or password. To add an additional defense layer, the identity verification requires biometric authentication, replacing the standard password.
Although it is a precious guarantee, it can be embarrassing in situations where your hands are busy or your face is covered. This is where the Pixel watch comes into play, after a discovery of Google, working to make it a confidence by trust for identity control.
Integration of the smartwatch into the operating system
Mishaal Rahman (via Android authority) recently discovered that Google is preparing to integrate the check identity with the Pixel watch in the next Android 16 QPR update. It also surfaced a screen of splashes for the functionality that reads
Identity control works with your pixel watch
Prevent others from opening applications that require a finger print or unlocking the face. When connected to your Pixel watch, your safety is ensured with greater mobility.
This means that biometric authentication could be ignored even outside the designated areas if your pixel watch is connected to your phone. It is a practical solution for moments when verification of identity is falsely triggered or when biometric authentication is not possible due to gloves, masks or other obstructions.
Of course, this raises concerns about potential improper use if the phone and the Pixel watch are stolen together. Google can introduce use limits or time -based restrictions to mitigate this risk, and it will be interesting to see how the company addresses this potential escape. Be that as it may, extended identity control seems to be a welcome addition for users who are looking for both security and convenience.
Will Samsung Galaxy Watch Support Identity check?
Based on the internal functionality channels, the support is confirmed for Pixel Watch 3 and Pixel Watch 4. However, it is always possible that the old models of Pixel watch can also receive the update.
Regarding other watches, it is not yet confirmed if Samsung will adopt a similar approach, but it is possible that users of Galaxy Watch can see this functionality in the future, especially since Samsung has already deployed identity control on its Galaxy smartphones.
Beyond that, Google already allows Watch Pixel users to unlock paired phones, and we hope to see more safety features fill the gap between phones and mobile devices.
