AI is transforming higher education in Oklahoma, for better or worse

Artificial intelligence transforms the landscape of higher education into Oklahoma, according to two local teachers.

“Two years ago, when I started teaching my lessons, there was a nod to AI. Now it has become a type of normal technology. So I see a change between novelty towards normality,” said Dr John Hassell, professor at the Polytechnic Institute of OU.

Dr. Hassell said his students did not always come to him to ask for clarifications on the lessons.

“They will come back, however, and will talk to their cat bot and say:” explain this principle as I was five years old “, and therefore they will somehow fill the areas they need help in what they would be timid to speak to me,” he explained.

Students also use class in class for other things.

“They can use a generative AI program like Claude or Chat GPT to help them build an overview of what a mission could look like,” said Dr. Laura Dumin, English and technical writing teacher at the University of Central Oklahoma.

Dr. Dumin added that if students are missing peer review opportunities, “they can take their paper if they are comfortable putting it in a large language model and asking for comments as if it were a peer exam.”

She said that she also had students who find it difficult to manage time.

“You can take all your programs from your lessons and stick them in a large language model and say:” Please build me a weekly schedule. Tell me what is due. Tell me how long it will take me to do it; When should I start, how long should I go to each of these things, “she said.

There are also people who use AI in class to cheat, the teachers agreed.

“We have things like meta glasses so that students can have glasses, they can even be a prescription, and students can make their way through the lessons,” she concluded.

Another drawback – Dr. Dumin said that she had heard students who count strongly on programs like Cat GPT say they lose the ability to think by themselves and to be creative.

She also shared a false idea that the generator does work faster. According to its experience, this type of software adds depth to the content but does not necessarily accelerate the process.
