Android Desktop approaches a bit of chromeos in Android 16

We know for a bit that Google works on an office mode for Android and a special version of Chrome to work on it. The latest overview of this effort is graceful of Android Expert Mishaal Rahman, reporting for Android authority. By diving into developer options on a Google Pixel 8 Pro performing a Beta Android 16 Early version, Rahman was able to manually activate this still in development mode. The connection of the phone to a USB-C compatible monitor has instantly launched a PC type interface on the largest screen, with significant progress compared to previous iterations.

With this last look, things seem to be merged in a more coherent experience. The brief video demonstration of Rahman reveals a desktop environment with an at the bottom task bar, with pinned applications, recent applications, an application launcher recalling the Windows starter menu and standard Android navigation buttons on the right. At the top, a familiar Android status bar displays the time, Wi-Fi, cell signal and other system icons. Slipping it down the height even reveals the quick double column parameters and the notification panel, similar to the interface on Android tablets and foldables today.

The applications are embarking on free form windows which can be resized, moved and broken side by side, controlled via a keyboard and a connected mouse. Impressive, the phone remains fully functional independently while the desktop mode is active on the external display.

Although it is an exciting development, do not expect what happens so soon. Rahman plans that this office mode may not be fully cooked in time for the official launch of Android 16 later this year. It is plausible that he could make his debut in a version of subsequent quarterly platform (QPR) or even be retained for Android 17 in 2026.

The persistent chromeos / Android question

The biggest question surrounding this functionality is its strategic adjustment in the wider computer landscape of Google. Google is actively working to take advantage of the Android framework under Chromeos, blurring the lines between the two platforms. Simultaneously, the addition of robust office capacities directly in Android opens intriguing possibilities. Could this open the way to laptops or convertibles powered by Android? Or is this fundamental work mainly intended to standardize the experience of partners like Samsung, who already invest massively in features like Dex?

Some users (myself include) clearly love the idea of the concept of phone as a PC. You cannot deny that the simplicity of connecting a single device to the mooring stations at work and at home holds the call. Whether Google builds all this so that users have regularly accosted their pixels or the creation of the underlying architecture for other manufacturers is not clear. It is an interesting development that suggests that Android’s abilities continue to develop, potentially pushing the limits of what we expect from our mobile devices.
