Audiomodern Gatelab 2 is the new improved version of its creative and fun gate sequencer plugin for macOS, Windows and iOS.
Time machine and we return to 2021. In September of the same year, Audiomodern released Gatelab, a free gate sequencer plugin for macOS, Windows and iOS. Even today, it remains a popular gift among music producers.
Today, four years later, the successor is here. Audiomodern has released Gatelab 2. Of course it’s better and more complete, but this time it’s not a free plugin. However, you can get it for free with any purchase made during its Black Friday/Holiday sale.
Audiomodern Gatelab 2
Gatelab 2 is a gate sequencer plugin and continues the concept of v1, but in an expanded form. It offers traditional gate sequencing of up to 64 steps, using two sequencer lines.
Like the previous version, Audiomodern Gatelab 2 features a stream mode, allowing you to manipulate the volume curve and create a volume modulation generator.
There are also different sequence directions (forward, reverse, ping-pong mode), a ratchet function with up to three subdivisions and a random function. This is what you know about Gatelab 1.
Gatelab 2 introduces new randomization algorithms with which you can instantly generate new variations of your programmed patterns.
Along with this, it has density controls and switchable flow or gate styles, allowing you to transform any sound into scalable rhythm textures.
Filtration
Also new is a new multi-mode filter section with cutoff and resonance controls. This makes the plugin even more of an effects processor. This allows you to achieve various effects of cutting, gate, etc.
Additionally, it comes with an optimized presets manager and improved overall performance. Audiomodern Gatelab 2 can also output MIDI to drive other applications or plugins in your DAW. So you can incorporate rhythm into any sound source.
According to the developers, they have also completely rebuilt the MIDI FX versions for AUv3 and Logic Pro. Yes, there is also a handy iOS version.
The operation is just as simple, quick and fun as in v1. You draw the steps in the sequencers and you get rhythmic results instantly. Alternatively, you take the new randomization algorithms and roll your models with the dice.
Gatelab 2 is a powerful yet simple plugin that lets you transform static audio into dynamic grooves. Sequence and animate patterns, add rhythm, movement and creative energy to any sound.
First impression
A nice evolution of the Gatelab plugin. It’s great that there is an iOS version again, as the plugin is a lot of fun to use with a touchscreen for programming steps on the fly.
It’s a shame it’s no longer a free plugin. Still, the asking price and the offer to get it free with a purchase during its Black Friday sale is very fair from Audiomodern.
