California AG to investigate xAI, Grok over sexualized AI images of women and children

The California Attorney General on Wednesday announced an investigation into non-consensual sexually explicit material produced using Grok, the artificial intelligence chatbot developed by xAI. The investigation into the Elon Musk-owned company comes amid a broader global backlash against deepfake images that spread on X. Attorney General Rob Bonta’s office cited reports that users asked Grok to “undress” images of women and children without the subject’s consent. The chatbot was used to manipulate real images to depict women in bikinis or in sexually explicit poses. “The avalanche of reports detailing the non-consensual and sexually explicit material that xAI has produced and posted online in recent weeks is shocking,” Bonta said in a statement. “This material, which depicts women and children naked and in sexually explicit situations, has been used to harass people on the internet. I urge xAI to take immediate action to ensure this does not go further. “In recent days, Malaysia and Indonesia have blocked access to Grok. The chatbot has also come under pressure in the European Union, India and the United Kingdom, which announced on Monday that they were considering criminalizing “nudification apps.” Last week, Grok limited image generation and editing to paid users. KCRA 3 has contacted X and xAI for comment. – The Associated Press contributed to this story.
