Su Jionglong, vice dean of the School of AI and Advanced Computing at Xian Jiaotong University-Liverpool, studies AI applications to reduce discrimination, provide emotional support and make faster medical diagnoses.
He said he was creating a start-up with his students, who developed AI-based software to translate written texts to and from sign language.
“The lightweight proprietary model could be used as a mobile app or installed on smart glasses,” he said, adding that virtual avatars would perform movements in sign language or text would be displayed in real time.
Su said the team was in talks with local governments and industrial parks, who were eager to provide financial support for product launches.
“We are innovating these technologies to meet the real demands of society,” he said. “Students with disabilities can learn better in the classroom, patients can have more succinct and meaningful conversations with doctors, and discrimination in the workplace can be minimized.” »
