Cobb County pioneers AI training for 911 dispatchers with CommsCoach Simulation

COBB county turns to artificial intelligence to better prepare its latest distributors of the 911 for unpredictable and high pressure requests for emergency calls.

What they say:

The COBB County Emergency Communications Department has become the first Georgia agency to implement a training platform supplied by AI called Commscoach simulationsDeveloped by Govworx. The system plunges recruits into dynamic and real scenarios in a low risk environment before making their first live call.

“Commscoach is a training platform fueled by AI which allows us to put our latest recruits in a low-risk environment where they can practice real calls without really being on the phone and putting lives at stake,” said Desmond Harris with Cobb 911.

Recruits are exposed to a range of emergency emergency situations using legitimate addresses and background noise to imitate real calls. Harris says that AI adapts, which makes each scenario unpredictable and realistic.

“We can create scenarios where it is scripted, but also, because it is AI, it is quite intelligent. It can change situations, so things are quite dynamic,” said Harris.

When you answer calls 911, operators face a wide range of appellants. “It could be someone screaming you, someone very calm, someone crying, upset,” added Harris.

Amore Steele, a first-class recruit to use the platform, said that the simulations had given her more confidence when she is preparing to be put online.

“You just have to learn to tone and, you know, be able to know exactly what is the real emergency and get help right away,” said Steele. “It helps because you have obtained scenarios of real life. We had to understand exactly what to say in a call instead of simply doing it.”

Local perspective:

County officials say that technology marks a major step in the way emergency stakeholders are trained, which helps make sure they are ready to manage any call when the phone rings.
