The chart shows the latest update on the number of seats won by the ruling bloc (red) and the opposition (blue). The ruling camp had 235 seats before the elections, and the opposition had 230. A total of 233 seats are needed to obtain a majority in the 465-seat House.

TOKYO – Team Mirai, Japan’s new opposition force focused on artificial intelligence, won its first seat in the House of Representatives on Sunday, a major breakthrough just six months after gaining national party status.

Mixing online video broadcasts and street speeches, the party, whose name Mirai means future in Japanese, appealed mainly to young voters. Leader Takahiro Anno, beaming with a wide smile, said he was “really happy” and thanked his supporters for their support.

At a campaign office in Tokyo, television reports shortly after 8 p.m. predicted the party would pick up seats in the proportional representation race. Anno pumped his right fist and shouted, “We did it,” as cheers erupted in the room.

Team Mirai, established in 2025, won its first seat in last summer’s House of Councilors elections, meeting the legal requirements to be recognized as a political party.
