First calls and SMS, now pixels could detect scams from cat applications (APK Teardown)

C. Scott Brown / Android Authority

Tl; DR

  • A Android authority Disassembly revealed that the detection function of the Google scam is coming to cat applications.
  • The function will display scam detection alerts in cat application notifications.
  • Applications like WhatsApp, Signal, Instagram and Twitter may be able to support this functionality.

We have unearthed the Android System Intelligence update for the Pixel 10 series (version B.13.PlayStore.pixel10.801661517) and discovered that Google is working to widen the detection of the scam to certain third -party applications. The functionality will probably be accessible by typing Settings> Security and confidentiality> More security and confidentiality> Scam detection. Discover the screenshots below.

As the screenshots suggest, detection of the scam in the supported third-party applications will apply to cat notifications rather than operating inside the cat application itself. We assume that this will be fueled by Gemini Nano, a bit like the detection of the scam for calls and SMS. So what kind of alerts could you see? We have managed to discover certain channels, which can be viewed below.

Code

May contain harmful contents
Likely scam
Scam Detection found suspicious activity in this message
Protect yourself against scams:

Not a scam
Scam Detection paused for this chat

As shown in the above chains, detection of the scam in chat applications may warn you that a message has a “suspicious activity”, could be a scam or could contain harmful content. The penultimate chain also suggests that you can press a button to confirm that a message is not a scam. The last channel reveals that you can interrupt the detection of the scam for “this cat”. This is good news because it suggests that detection of the scam works on a basis by cat rather than appearance. Thus, you can theoretically mark individual cats in the form of scams, allowing other cats of the same application to continue as normal.

We also spotted an extract of text alluding to a daily limit for scam warnings:

Impossible to display the warning for the current message, because the number of alerts already displayed has reached the daily limit.

It is not clear if it would be a technical limitation of the detection function of the scam or if Google simply envisages a limit for the convenience of users. After all, it could be a somewhat disruptive experience if you get alerts every few minutes.

What about supported applications? We have found a file that refers to this functionality and mentions a variety of application names:

  • Google messages
  • Google Cat
  • Signal
  • Whatsapp
  • Instagram
  • Kakao Talk
  • Double
  • Verizon messages
  • Twitter
  • Facebook Messenger Lite
  • Hangouts
  • Test SAFECOMMS Chat

The last two applications are special entries because the hangouts have since been interrupted. Meanwhile, we assume that the SAFECOMMS TEST Chat application is used for internal purposes only. In any case, this list does not confirm that all these applications will support the detection of the scam.

We expect this widen scam detection function to arrive at the Pixel 9 and Pixel 10 series. Anyway, it would be a welcome addition to the GHG arsenal to the scam and the protective measures of Google spam. After all, applications like WhatsApp and Instagram are paradise for crooks and fraudsters. This expansion would also occur more than a year after the colleague Rita El-Khoury urged Google to bring a detection of the scam to Android himself.
