The Google app’s old voice search experience is finally being modernized with a Search Live-inspired overhaul.
Voice search in the Google app on Android lets you dictate a query, with the answer spoken out loud and appearing on the search results page. For the most part, this interface has remained the same for many years with a four-dot waveform in Google colors.
Google is finally redesigning the interface you get after tapping the microphone at the top of the Google app, in search results, or in the Pixel Launcher bar. It’s very inspired by Search Live’s UI, although there are some tweaks.
Old versus new
The “G” logo is centered and there is a “What do you think?” » prompt which then gives way to transcription. The compact waveform has been replaced with an arc that vibrates when you speak. There’s also the “Search Song” shortcut at the very bottom.
Google also updated the ping used to indicate that the microphone is active and when its timeout has expired. It corresponds to the sound used for AI mode.
Old
New
This update shows how simple voice search must still be very popular with users. More broadly, AI Mode and Search Live, as well as the latest Google Lens redesign, have significantly improved the quality of the search UI.
Google’s voice search overhaul is not yet widely rolled out on Android.
