While the older versions of chrome will always work on the devices running Android 8 (Oreo) and Android 9 (PIE), they will no longer receive essential safety updates – deposit users at a greater risk of attacks.
Why this counts
Without regular security fixes, obsolete devices become targets of choice for cybercriminals. Google frequently emits Chrome updates to correct critical vulnerabilities, and lack of support means that these older Android devices will be exposed to known and emerging threats.
Why the support ends for Android 8 and 9
Although they can always feed about 10% of Android devices worldwide, Android 8.0 and 9.0 are now considered obsolete and unable to meet modern safety standards. This follows Google’s decision in 2023 to end the management of Android 7.0 Nougat.
Ellen T., a chrome support manager, confirmed in a declaration cited by Forbes::
“Chrome 138 is the latest version that will support Android 8.0 and 9.0. Users must go to Android 10.0 or later to continue to receive Chrome updates.”
The recent defect Chrome Security highlights the risks
The announcement comes shortly after Google has corrected critical vulnerability (CVE-2025-4664) in Chrome for PC users. The bug, which was actively exploited in the wild, could have allowed hackers to divert user accounts.
Google responded quickly, by deploying a correction in Chrome version 136.0.7103.113/114 – but only for those who use supported and updated versions.
The security researcher VSEVOLOD KOKORIN, who discovered the defect, warned that uncharted versions could lead to a complete takeover of the accounts.
How to stay protected
To remain secure, Google urges all users assigned to upgrade their devices to Android 10 or later. If your device cannot be updated, replacing it is the safest action plan.
How to check and update your Android version
Check your current Android version:
-
Open the Settings application.
-
Press the phone or tablet, then the Android version.
-
Look for details such as the Android version, the level of security update and the construction number.
Check the system updates available:
-
Open the parameters.
-
Press System, then Update of the software.
-
Follow the on -screen instructions to install updates, if available.
Don’t take long: act now
Google stresses that inaction is not an option. Although Chrome can continue to operate on older devices, the lack of updates will make them more and more unclean as new exploits emerge.
Security risks for devices that do not upgrade
The devices stuck on Android 8 or 9 will no longer receive chrome safety fixes, making them more sensitive to cyber attacks, data violations and account compromises. If the update is not possible, the transition to a more recent device is highly recommended.
Stay up to date or stay on display
The older chrome versions could always operate on obsolete Android devices, but without updates, they will quickly become safety liabilities.
What you need to do now:
-
Go to Android 10+ if your device supports it
-
Replace the device if the updates are not available
-
Install the latest Chrome version to stay secure
