Bringing the AI to smartphones and tablets was a huge success for Google, which saw its AI Gemini assistant earlier this month to become the best free application on Apple App Store for the first time. More specifically, AI and Gemini have been an integral part of the latest major Android updates, and at this stage are super integrated in the Android ecosystem.
For the moment, you cannot say as many chromeos, the light operating system of Google for computers and laptops. But everything is ready to change.
Earlier this year, the CEO of Google Sameer Samat confirmed that Chromeos and Android would combine to create a more transparent experience between devices. Speaking during the Qualcomm Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii on Wednesday, Samat said that it was one of the things he was “super excited for next year” and gave a lot of additional details on how and why behind the move.
“For a long time, mobile phones and PC communicates … We now have this opportunity with a large screen calculation to add this,” he said. “In the Android ecosystem, you all have these different devices, and you want your AI to be able to work on all. So it’s the new era.”
This does not mean that Chromeos disappears, however. “If you are thinking of the laptop-form factor, we have been chromeos for a long time, and we are super engaged in this platform, and it was really successful for us,” said Samat. In fact, Chromeos’ experience will remain, but it is the reference technology to go to the race on Android, he added.
Speaking on Tuesday at the Snapdragon Summit, the SVP of Google’s devices and services, Rick Osterloh, highlighted the technical details of the project. “We build a technical basis together for our products on PCs and office computer systems,” he said. “This is another way of taking advantage of all the excellent work that we do together on our AI battery, our complete battery, bringing Gemini models, bringing the assistant, bringing our whole community of applications and developers in the PC field.”
It will be fascinating to see which gemini experiences will allow on Chromeos and how it could raise the large -screen operating system of Google for this new era. Google hopes that it will be able to reproduce the success of its mobile operating system based on AI on its laptops and make its chromebooks even more attractive for owners of Android phones who seek to upgrade their computers thanks to the transparent integration of Gemini on their various devices.
