After the depreciation of the assistant driving mode earlier this year, Google Maps is now missing multimedia reading controls for Youtube music and Spotify on Android.
With the deletion of driving mode, users had to use the “Show Media Playback Controls” feature that works with applications like YouTube Music and Spotify.
During navigation, this extends the lower leaf with a bar that has the album art, the name of the song and the artist on the left. In addition to the right reading commands, the “Browse” tapping shows nine suggestions to change quickly. There is also a shortcut to “open Youtube music”.
The activation of this blocks the lower half of the “report” button, but it is always Tappable.
Old vs new
From Google Maps 25.28 (stable) and 25.29 (beta), these media checks disappeared during last week. Settings> Navigation loses the option “Show multimedia reading controls” and the “Default media application” option.
It is not clear if it is a bug because the functionality remains available on iOS today. Without assistant driving mode, Google Maps should really offer easy access to multimedia controls. Hopefully this is not an intentional elimination.
