Google merges Chromeos and Android in “a single platform”

After months of rumors, Google’s Android head confirmed that Chromeos was combined with the company’s mobile platform.

In an interview TechradarSameer Samat, president of the Android ecosystem, noted the use by the interview with the typical ecosystem of Apple products – including a MacBook Pro and an Apple Watch – before finally recognizing writing on the wall with Chromeos.

“I asked because we are going to combine Chromeos and Android in a single platform, and I am very interested in the way people use their laptops these days and what they do.”

Unfortunately, the interview – which covered a large number of subjects, up to Android 16, Gemini and Smart Lunes – does not come back to this surprise announcement, which means that we do not have exactly many clues to work. Our only real clue comes from the curiosity of Samat, as he says, how people are currently using their laptops to do the work. This could suggest an emphasis on the supply of a more robust application support on this combined platform, but I admit it, it is pure speculation on my part.

Be that as it may, the writing has been on the wall for some time now, in particular with the continuous development by Google of an experience of the desktop user interface for Android. Obviously, this decision is accompanied by many questions for current users of Chromeos, including how their laptops will adapt to this new platform and if the move to Android will modify the typical support window for a decade provided by Google and various OEM Chromebook. This could also cause many headache for business users, especially schools, depending on how deployment is carried out.

It does not seem that the move is just at the corner of the street, of course – to repeat, there is nothing here which would really constitute real details. But with Chromeos sometimes feeling stagnant and the laptops of the arm having a little time, it has the impression that there is no better time than the present to implement this kind of change.
