Google messages deploys sensitive content warnings on Android

Google messages for Android have now deployed sensitive content warnings that blur the naked images.

In the messages application, this safety feature detects and blurs the images that contain nudity. You must be connected to a Google account in Google Messages to work. The treatment / classification occurs on disk and is powered by Android System SafetyCore. It “does not send identifiable data or one of the content or classified results to Google servers”.

When you receive such an image:

  • To open a useful resource page, press naked images can be harmful.
  • To block the sender number, press block this number.
  • To open the image, press Next, then no, do not visualize or yes, display.
  • To come back to messages, go back.

This also triggers a warning when you send or transmit a naked image: “You will remember the risks and you must confirm to continue.” After this prompt:

  • To continue, sweep to the right yes, send.
  • To cancel, select no, don’t send.

For adults (18+), this feature is deactivated and can be activated from Google message settings> Protection and Safety> Manage sensitive content warnings> Warning in Google messages.

Otherwise::

  • Supervised users: This feature cannot be deactivated, but parents can control it via the Family Link application.
  • Unwanted adolescents (aged 13 to 17): This feature can be deactivated in the Google account settings.

This security feature was announced in October and started to travel to the beta channel in April. We now see it widely deployed with the stable version of Google Messages and Play Services.
