IOS 26 adds a new smart display zoom parameter on Carplay.
When the parameter is activated, Carplay will be automatically resized to better adapt to the shape and size of the screen of the dashboard of your vehicle, if possible.
The images below show what Carplay looks like before and after the activation of the smart display zoom setting. With the activated setting, all the elements of the user interface become smaller, allowing an additional line of application icons to be adapted to the screen.
Apple highlighted the parameter In a WWDC 2025 video For developers this week.
“Vehicle screens are in many forms and sizes,” said Olivia Hess, Carplay software engineer. “In iOS 26, some screen configurations allow drivers to adjust their display scale with a configurable smart display zoom in carplay settings. When the smart display zoom is activated, your carplay application will be automatically resized on the new display scale.”
To see this new Carplay parameter, you will need to use an iPhone running iOS 26, which is currently in beta of the developer. A public beta version will be available next month and the update is expected to be published in September for the iPhone 11 and more recent.
Carplay obtains many other new features with iOS 26, including a liquid glass design, live activities on the dashboard screen, a new screen of widgets, tapbacks and pinned conversations in the messages application, multi-touch support in mapping applications, the possibility of reading videos from an iPhone via Airplay while the vehicle is parked, and more.
