Meta introduces AI tools for extreme weather

As Florida’s hurricane season draws to a close next week, local authorities and emergency managers are already preparing for the challenges of the coming year.

Meta’s AI for Good team is working with Florida officials to introduce artificial intelligence tools designed to predict, prepare for, and respond to extreme weather events. Two key tools in this initiative are Meta’s Lama And Segment everything related to AI models, which can improve communication in an emergency.

More than 90% of Floridians express concerns about hurricane preparedness, and the state boasts of highest percentage of households with disaster preparedness kits in the country. These statistics highlight residents’ strong interest in emergency preparedness, especially given Florida’s status as one of the Most disaster-prone states in the country.

Meta’s AI tools are already used by research institutions, nonprofits, and emergency agencies in other disaster-prone states. For example:

— Texas A&M researchers collaborated with Harris County Emergency Services to show how the Llama Model can improve situational awareness during a crisis.

— In Pennsylvania, Meta partnered with the University of Pennsylvania to host a workshop with emergency services teams from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Maryland focused on the application of innovative AI and data in preparation for the 2026 World Cup. This collaboration will expand in the months leading up to the event.

— In California, the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services used Meta data to improve wildfire response efforts and held workshops to further integrate Meta AI into disaster planning.

“Florida faces significant challenges when it comes to catastrophic weather, so preparation is key. At Meta, we work closely with emergency managers across the state to ensure AI tools like Llama and Segment Anything can help predict, prepare for, and respond to hurricanes and natural disasters. Our goal is to give communities and first responders the information they need to act quickly and keep people safe,” said Laura McGorman, director of AI for Good at Meta.
