In a major change that promises to improve the experience of millions of American users, Spotify has subject Updated updates for its iOS application following a decision by the Federal Court which obliges Apple to soften its restrictions on the App Store.
The update will finally allow spotify users on iPhones and iPads see subscription prices, access to promotions and purchase of premium plans directly from the application, the features that were previously blocked by Apple rules. Users will be able to go from a free account to one of the Spotify premium plans, whether it is an individual, a student, a duo or a family, by clicking on a link in the application that leads to the Spotify website, where they can choose from a range of payment methods beyond the Apple system.
Spotify should have more than 55 million subscribers in the United States, according to Bloomberg. A good part of these iOS users who did not have flexibility of invoicing due to the tight controls of Apple.
This decision comes after a US federal judge ruled that Apple was in “voluntary violation” of an injunction in 2021 and ordered the technology giant to stop limiting the ability of developers to freely communicate with their customers. Spotify acted quickly on the decision, subjecting an application update which, according to him, will offer American users a more transparent and flexible experience.
“American consumers can finally see how something costs in our application, including pricing details on subscriptions and information on promotions that will save money,” Spotify announced in a press release.
These changes reflect a Spotify policy introduced for Android users in 2022, when the company adopted the Google user choice billing system. Android listeners have since been able to subscribe and make purchases via Google Play Billing or directly via the own Spotify site.
“The fact that we were unable to provide these basic services, which were authorized by the judge’s order four years ago, is absurd,” said the company, qualifying the “revolutionary” court decision.
Beyond the update on how iOS users can pay for subscriptions, Spotify has also alluded to future opportunities for creators and listeners. The “opens the door to other transparent purchase opportunities that will benefit the creators,” said the company, noted the company. He also teased easier audio purchases as an example of what will happen if Apple approves the new application update.
