I’m always excited to see how the iOS music creation platform develops. In recent years, there has been an apparent increase in the number of high-quality apps. With the introduction of the AUv3 plugin standard, many developers have ported their macOS/Windows plugins to iOS. See Eventide, FabFilter and others.
Today I am pleased to announce that the full version of KV331 Audio’s popular SynthMaster 2 plugin is now available for iOS. Please do not confuse it with SynthMaster One, which is a pure wavetable synthesizer. SM2 2 is a true synthesis workstation.
SynthMaster 2 for iPad
The SynthMaster 2 version for iPad is not a simple port. The developers have designed a new graphical interface adapted to the advantages of the iPad. Many developers fail here because they use the same mouse-based GUI as on PC and Mac without optimizing it for touch. I had the chance to beta test the application and the GUI works very well.
SynthMaster supports native resolutions of various iPad devices and comes with four different skins (blue, white, dark and proto). Separate interfaces are available for the AUv3 version.
Sound engine
The sound engine is identical to the SynthMaster 2.9 macOS/Windows plugin version and also uses two layers. Each layer features two powerful oscillator blocks, offering four distinct synthesis modes: virtual analog (also called basic), additive, wavetableAnd vector.
The basic mode, for example, plays single cycle waveforms Or samples, and with oscillator unison you can get up to 8 voices per oscillator. SynthMaster 2 also gives you the ability to import your own waveforms, wavetables or multi-samples. In addition, you get 4 versatile modulators perfect for modulating the phases of other oscillators or modulators to achieve advanced FM timbres.
From there he enters the double filter section which includes six different filter flavors: digital, analog, scale, diode scale, state variable and bite. You can also apply a custom distortion before, inside or after the filter. The oscillator and filter section offers many sound design options, probably one of the most comprehensive available on iOS today.
Big modulations, effects…
The modulation section is everywhere and offers the user a lot to discover. By layer, you have four ADSR envelopes, four multi-segment envelopes, 4 LFOs, 4 sequences, 4 key scales, macroAnd MIDI commands. This should be enough to build very complex and evolving sounds.
This section also benefits from the touch screen. New modulations can be created easily by dragging and dropping a modulation source onto a button or slider. Thanks to visual feedback and some neat interface add-ons, you can easily track active modulators.
Additionally, you can fine-tune your sounds with five insert effects on each layer. There is 13 different types of effects, including vocoder, delay, chorus, distortion, lo-fi, reverb, and much more. Two additional global effects These send buses give you even more effects routing flexibility. Finally, he offers a arpeggiator/sequencer section with up to 32 steps.
The developers have done a great job. The sound is as good as on a PC/Mac, but programming sounds is much more fun with touch. And don’t forget. You can now create presets on the iPad and then transfer them to the SM2 Mac/Win version. A big like for this feature. Anyone who loves synthesizers on the iPad can’t avoid the SM2.
The KV331 Audio SynthMaster 2 is available now for an introductory price of $14.99 USD. It works as a standalone app on iPads with iOS 11+ and as an AUv3 plugin.
Two IAPs are also on sale. The Desktop Presets upgrade at the introductory price of $4.99 USD gives you all the factory presets (2,000 total) from the SynthMaster 2.9 plugin.
The “All Expansion Bundle” now costs $39.99 USD and includes all 32 current SynthMaster preset expansion banks.
