Mexico residents protest against gentrification | American migrant influx and booming rents | N18G

On July 4, hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Mexico City to protest against increasing gentrification, especially in neighborhoods like Colonia Condesa. The demonstrators underlined the increase in the cost of living, including an increase of 47% of rents in the past five years, which has led to the movement of long -term residents. A major concern is the influx of wealthy American migrants, many of which work remotely and are driven by the relatively low cost of Mexico City. These foreigners can stay up to 180 days without visa, often turning their stays to avoid legal restrictions. The demonstrators called for a more regulated migration and foreign residents to contribute more significantly to the local economy. According to activist Eduardo Alanis, government policies tend to promote new arrivals richer on local communities. The demonstration reflects an increasing reaction against policies and economic changes which favor foreign investments and lifestyles on the stability and the needs of local populations.
