Perplexity AI CEO Reports Fake Comet App Ahead of iOS Launch

As hype builds around Perplexity AI’s upcoming iOS browser, positioned to challenge Safari, CEO Aravind Srinivas has warned that a fake Comet app on the App Store is unaffiliated and urged users to wait for official updates.

Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity AI has issued a public alert warning iPhone users about a counterfeit app falsely claiming to be the company’s upcoming AI browser, Comet. The fake app is currently listed on the Apple App Store, raising concerns among tech enthusiasts as they wait for the official launch.

Speaking to X (formerly Twitter), Srinivas clarified that the app in question is not affiliated with Perplexity AI. “The Comet app currently on the iOS App Store is fake and spammy and not from Perplexity,” he posted. “We will notify you directly when Comet iOS is ready to be pre-registered and downloaded. »

Buzz relies on an AI-powered browser

This clarification comes in a context of growing anticipation around Comet, which is positioned as a potential revolutionary in mobile navigation. Srinivas recently described it as “Safari’s first real competitor” on iPhone, following the successful launch of its Android version earlier this year.

While Apple requires all iOS browsers to use its WebKit engine, Perplexity aims to differentiate Comet with its AI-driven experience. The browser is designed as a “dynamic co-pilot,” helping users discover information faster while ensuring source transparency – a core feature of Perplexity’s conversational search platform.

Caution advised until the official launch

Perplexity AI has become a growing alternative to traditional ad-intensive search tools, emphasizing speed, clarity and user confidence. The upcoming iOS version of Comet is expected to tightly integrate smart search with seamless web browsing.

In the meantime, Srinivas urges users to remain vigilant and avoid downloading any apps claiming to be Comet until the company releases an official version. “We will announce it ourselves when the iOS app is ready,” he confirmed.

Apple has not yet commented on the presence of the fake app.
