Apple recently announced that iPhone users could soon watch videos directly on the Carplay screen in supported vehicles.
This is undoubtedly the greatest functionality of new Carplay to come with the iOS 26 update later this year, and yet Apple did not even mention it during its Keynote WWDC 2025 last month. Instead, he was buried On Apple’s developer’s website.
IPhone users will be able to wirelessly broadcast videos on the Carplay screen using AirPlay, according to Apple. For security reasons, video playback will only be available when the vehicle is parked to avoid driving distraction. The connected iPhone can detect when the vehicle is moving and ending the reading.
Apple says that car manufacturers must add carplay support with AirPlay Video, it will therefore probably take a while to deploy. It seems that AirPlay feature will be available for regular carplay and high -end carplay, but it is not clear if it will be activated in existing vehicles, or if it will be limited to new vehicles.
From the Carplay page on the Apple developer’s website:
Video in the car
The airplay video in the car allows people to watch their favorite iPhone videos directly on their carplay display when they do not drive. Integrate Carplay support with AirPlay Video to activate this feature in your car.
This feature would be particularly beneficial in electric vehicles with Carplay, because it would provide the driver and any entertainment passengers while they are parked in a charging station. Some electric vehicles already offer this native capacity. Tesla, for example, has long offered a theatrical application that can play videos from applications like Netflix, Hulu, YouTube and Twitch on the dashboard screen, while the vehicle is parked.
Apple has not shared other details or images for AirPlay video in the car. The availability of the functionality may vary depending on the country depending on the security regulations.
There were already unsuccessful ways to watch videos via Carplay, with various jailbreak adjustments and beta applications from Testflight promising to unlock such features. Now is something that Apple will officially authorize.
