This new Android parameter will solve a big readability problem

Tl; DR

  • Google adds a new decrease in “reduction vague effects” to solve the readability problems caused by its new expressive design of material 3.
  • This new accessibility parameter, available in the 2509 Android Canary version, deactivates the background blur at the system scale to improve text visibility.
  • It replaces a developer option, which a lot facilitates regular users to find and activate the functionality once it deploys.

The team at Android authority is a big fan of the new expressive overhaul of Android, and it seems that we are not alone. According to our recent survey, almost 63% of you love it too, while most of the remaining 37% find it acceptable. For the small fraction of our readers who do not like new design, the main complaint is readability. Expressive 3 material makes an abundant use of the effects of background vagueness, which, although visually attractive, is done at the cost of the visibility of the text.

Although this may not affect most people, reduced contrast poses an accessibility challenge for certain users. To remedy this, Google plans to deploy a new Android parameter which reduces these background blur effects. Last month, Mindy Brooks, vice-president of product management and experiences of Google users on the Android platform, told me that this new parameter arrived in the “near future”, but it did not provide a specific release date.

I don’t want to miss the best of Android authority?

By searching the latest version of Android Canary 2509, I spotted a new one “Reduce the effects of blur“Rocking under Settings> Accessibility> Color and movement. According to its description, this parameter “TO DO[s] easier backgrounds and panels to see“When you activate.

From what I can say, the activation of this rocking effectively deactivates the background blur everywhere, from the quick setting panel and the notification shade on the lock screen, the application drawer and the recent applications menu.

The new switch reproduces the functionality of the old “Authorize blurring at the window“Adjusting in developer options, which has been deleted in this version of Canary. Thus, the new parameter does not add new features, but it is much easier for regular users to deactivate the background blur.

Even if this parameter is live in the Android Canary chain, it is not clear when it takes place on the stable or beta channels. I spotted the code for this parameter in the Android version 16 QPR2 BETA 2 and I was able to activate it manually, but it is not certain that Google plans to bring this tilting to the stable version of Android 16 QPR2 in December. We will have to wait for the next Android version 16 QPR2 Beta 3.
