The United States is slowly deploying assistance to add your driving license or your identifier to the Google Wallet application on Android.
5/31 update: At IS 2025, Google reiterated that state identifiers and driving licenses “arrive soon” to the six states / territories previously announced. The company also explained how digital IDs can be used for age verification.
Google wants to allow it to do so “without any possibility of connecting to the personal identity of a user” through what he calls proof of zero knowledge. This technology will be open so that anyone can use.
On mobile, if an application or a website requires your age, it is as simple as confirming that you want to share this information with a system sheet. On the desktop web, the experience involves scanning a QR code.
How to add your status identifier to Android
- Open the Google Wallet application on Android 9+
- Press the “Add to the wallet” button in the lower right corner
- Choose “ID” then “Driving license or State ID”
- Select your condition and follow the instructions
The process is to take a photo of the front and back of your physical card, as well as a short video of yourself for verification: a “photo of this video will be subject to your identity issuer”.
Once approved, the ID appears under the carousel of payment methods alongside other passes. The command can be reorganized, while you can remotely delete the online ID if your phone is missing: myaccount.google.com> Personal information> Manage identifiers.
What Google Wallet State ID are supported
Where state identifiers then come
Google previously declared to expect support to the following places:
Where you can use state identifiers
The main place you can use this digital identifier is at the TSA control points in Some American airports. There are two ways to do so, start by pressing your phone at the NFC terminal. You then review the information that will be shared with the TSA and authenticate with the unlocking of the device. There is also a QR code method which requires opening the ID in Google Wallet.
Officially, you must always transport the physical identity card at any time.
Some applications, such as car rental services, are starting to accept digital identifiers for identity and age verification. You must again examine and authenticate an prompt at the system before sharing this information.
For the future, IDs can be used at DMVS in Arizona, Georgia, Maryland and New Mexico as part of “improved and rationalized customer experiences”.
Google also works to allow you to use digital IDs to “recover Amazon accounts, access online health services with CVS and Mychart by EPIC, check profiles on platforms like Uber and more.”
Use passport as a real ID
Google in April Underlined how you can “use your identity card created from an American passport with the security of the TSA for domestic trips at treated airports, even if you do not have an identity or identity driving license issued by the State”. This before the deadline of May 7, 2025.
To do this, open Google Wallet> Add to wallet> ID pass. This three -step process consists in taking a photo of the information page of your passport, then scanning the safety chip found inside the rear cover of your passport. You must also record a video of your face that Google will examine “to make sure you are a real person and compare the video to your passport photo to make sure you are the owner of the passport”.
The NFC and QR code instructions for the use of this digital passport ID are unchanged from above. You should also keep the physical version on you when you travel. As a reminder, this will not work internationally.
