Jeffrey Shaffer, director of the Lindner College of Business Applied AI Labspoke with 700WLW about the future of AI in the workplace.
“The first thing is: don’t be afraid. I think you need to look at the technology. Pandora’s box is open. It’s all AI,” he said.
He explained how at Lindner, faculty and students hone lifelong skills that will be needed regardless of technological advances. Shaffer said skills such as professionalism, preparation, responsibility and respect can be very useful in any industry or profession and have been highlighted as key skills long before generative AI.
“What has really changed today is the technology aspect,” he added, emphasizing the importance of the human element that people can bring to their careers.
He gave the example of processing invoices. Even though AI can automate many steps in the process, it lacks the critical thinking, judgment and ethical reasoning needed to manage key steps in the workflow, he said.
