Cinco De Mayo: What it is and how to celebrate it


CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Sunday is officially Cinco De Mayo!

According to the national holiday calendar, Cinco De Mayo is Spanish for “May 5th” and Americans celebrate Mexican-American heritage and pride on this day.

What is Cinco De Mayo?

This day honors Mexico’s victory over the Second French Empire, led by Napoleon III at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, when 2,000 Mexican soldiers repelled more than 6,000 French soldiers. He declared a national holiday from now on.

This holiday has since become popular in the United States and is widely celebrated by people of Mexican descent.

How can you celebrate?

Cities across the United States should celebrate with parades, festivals, music, food and more. Some celebrations include the display of banners and events highlighting regional Mexican culture, music and dance. School districts also hold special events to educate students about its historical significance.

Restaurants and bars also got in on the action, with many offering food and drink specials on Sundays.
