The New York Liberty don’t yet look like the team that should have won the WNBA Finals last fall. Going 2-7 ATS so far this season highlights that concern, and bookmakers have started to worry.
Look specifically at tonight’s match against the Chicago Sky and how it compares to their match on May 23. This game was played in Brooklyn and New York came into the lead as a 16.5-point favorite, only to lose 90-81.
The reversal of the home courts this evening should adjust this gap by five or six points at most. Yet here we are with most books at -8.5. Why these 2-3 additional points?
It’s certainly not because Chicago has been wildly impressive. The Sky is 4-3 against the spread this season and 3-4 overall, meeting expectations.
The additional movement of 2 or 3 points in the gap is linked to the Liberty’s disappointment. It’s a fair criticism, even if this sluggish start to the season should not have been totally unexpected. This veteran roster is coming off a meltdown in last year’s WNBA Finals, and May basketball isn’t exactly lighting the competitive fires.
Yet the Liberty continues to win. They are 7-2 this season, little hurt in the standings by this lackluster start, this defeat against the Sky aside.
A chance for revenge should spark some motivation, and it comes when Chicago is most distracted. A young team led by a first-year head coach talked about everything but basketball on the court this week.
Frankly, that would have been a reason to inflate that gap rather than letting New York pessimism deflate it.

If anyone on New York’s roster should have taken this loss personally, it’s Jones, so some redemption will make sense tonight.
However, as a whole, the Liberty lacks the pieces to keep Angel Reese off the glass. The rookie has played well early in his career, mainly because his rebounding is a very reliable skill.
