Aston Villa reached their first major European semi-final since 1982 with a chaotic penalty shootout victory over Lille in the Europa Conference League.
In an extraordinary shootout after the tie ended 3-3 on aggregate after extra time, Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez – who had been booked earlier for wasting time – received another yellow card for appeared to gesture to the home fans.
Martinez, who had already repelled Nabil Bentaleb’s attempt, was allowed to continue as his initial warning was not carried over during the shootout.
The Argentine World Cup winner then denied Benjamin Andre’s attempt as Villa won 4-3 on penalties to progress to the last four.
