Power lines down in northeast Kansas amid tornado warnings, high winds


TOPEKA (KSNT) – According to the FreeState Electric Coop outage map, as of 9:40 p.m. there were 522 customers without power in Jackson County. Nearly 1,300 Evergy customers near Westmoreland and Topeka were without power.

Multiple power outages are being reported across northeast Kansas. powerful storm system crosses the region Tuesday evening.

More than 150 outages are active, impacting 3,200 customers on April 30, according to the Evergy Outage Map. A significant outage, affecting 745 customers, is focused on an area north of the city of Manhattan, which includes the towns of Wheaton, Westmoreland, Fostoria and Olsburg.

Another major outage, affecting the Silver Lake area, northwest of the city of Topeka, affects more than 600 Evergy customers. Several smaller outages are also being reported in central and north Topeka. There are also reports of power lines falling to the ground due to broken power poles.

Kaley Bohlen, a spokeswoman for Evergy, said crews are working to repair storm damage as quickly and safely as possible. She also gave the following safety tips:

  • Assume that all downed power lines are energized. Report downed lines to 911 then to Evergy.

  • No one should come within 30 feet of a downed power line.

  • If a branch or other object comes into contact with a power line, do not attempt to remove it.

  • Be aware of downed lines that may be covered by debris or downed trees.

  • Use caution with power tools and stay away from wet ground and standing puddles.

  • If you see someone touching a fallen line, don’t touch it.

  • If a power line falls on your car while you are in it, stay inside your car.
