A preliminary 3.6 earthquake shook Orange County Thursday afternoon, according to the United States Geological Survey.
The earthquake occurred shortly before 5 p.m., at a depth of nearly 12 km. The epicenter was about 1 mile southeast of Costa Mesa and just under a mile and a half northeast of Newport Beach. Another tremor, with a preliminary magnitude of 3.4, was felt just five minutes later, the USGS reports.
KTLA viewers in Huntington Beach, Costa Mesa, Fountain Valley and Avalon on Catalina Island reported feeling the roll.
“An earthquake was felt here in Costa Mesa. Jolt with 4 seconds of roll. Ouch,” a Costa Mesa resident identified only as Hector said in an email.
This is the second earthquake to hit Orange County this week.
On Wednesday, a preliminary magnitude 2.6 earthquake occurred around 1:46 p.m., about 2 miles east of Newport Beach, at a depth of about 7.7 miles, according to the United States Geological Survey.
So far, no damage has been reported following Thursday’s earthquake.
