Sacramento Republic FC advances to the US Open Cup after beating the San Jose Earthquakes at home 4-3 on Tuesday. The game went into overtime as the teams were tied 2-2 at the end of regulation. The USL Championship division team advanced to the quarterfinals of the nation’s oldest soccer tournament with a cupset victory over the Major League Soccer team. Kieran Phillips had an exceptional evening, scoring two goals for the Republic in minutes 17 and 38. Luis Felipe and Sebastian Herrera scored during extra time, fending off the chances of penalties. Tuesday’s match was a rematch of sorts in the U.S. Open Cup after Sacramento beat San Jose 2-0 in 2022. It was the first of three straight wins against MLS teams in overtime. of a series that ended with Republic FC losing to Orlando City SC in the final. Last year, Republic FC was eliminated early from the country’s oldest football tournament. The core club members from Republic’s historic 2022 run – Rodrigo López, Jack Gurr, Luis Felipe, Danny Vitiello, Damia Viader, Lee Desmond and Nick Ross – are still on the team. And this year, Republic have added more stars up front with Trevor Amann and Kieran Phillips on loan from Huddersfield Town AFC in England. MLS teams began playing in the tournament starting in 1996 and no lower division team has won the USA. Open Cup since the Rochester Rhinos in 1999. Republic, a lower division team in the USL Championship, advanced to the quarterfinals of the country’s oldest soccer tournament with a cupset victory over the Major League Soccer team.
